THE ODYSSEY on 70MM
Christopher Nolan shot his latest film The Odyssey on IMAX 70MM film stock using IMAX cameras. This is the first time a movie has been shot in its entirety in this format. He has shot sequences of some of his previous movies on IMAX, but this was the first time he shot a whole move on IMAX. IMAX cameras are notoriously noisy which makes it incredibly difficult to pick up dialogue while the camera is running. He and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema created a blimp to encase the camera and muffle the sound in order to successfully make the film without compromising on the dialogue. The film stock provides a bigger image that can fill up the entire screen giving additional depth, clarity and scope to the film.
You can see The Odyssey projected in IMAX 70MM on a few screens throughout the United States, but we do not have any in Minnesota. However, my friends at Emagine Theaters are presenting it in both IMAX at their Lakeville location and on 70MM film at Willow Creek. Check out the video below where I go into the booth and show you what that looks like!
