Sometimes all you need after a long day is a good family film that tugs at the heartstrings. I was touched and moved by the new Netflix movie Don’t Say Good Luck. The title “Don’t Say Good Luck” is taken from an old theater superstition which led to the phrase “break a leg.” Sunny Sandler is paving the way and showing a different side of the Sandler family than her famous father, Adam. In Don’t Say Good Luck she plays, Sophie, who is auditioning for the high school production of Waitress. Melanie Lynskey and Max Greenfield play her parents, and they run a local family-owned deli. Lynskey’s character, Elizabeth, is that supportive mom who loves her family more than anything. Sophie finds out that her mom’s cancer has resurfaced after her dad accidentally butt dials her and she overhears her parents’ conversation. It should be a celebratory time when Sophie finds out she gets cast as the lead role in Waitress, but she feels guilty doing the show while her mother’s health is getting worse. They’re a close-knit family who will go through all this together even if it isn’t always easy. Don’t Say Good Luck also stars Bebe Neuwrith and Steve Buscemi as Sophie’s grandparents.
