There is a lot to unpack here. It’s no surprise that The Shape of Water leads with 13 nominations. It was one nomination shy of tying La La Land, Titanic, and All About Eve with 14. It’s the favorite as of now to take home Best Picture, but the Academy does love a good surprise like last year’s win for Moonlight. Dunkirk (my pick!) came in second with eight nominations, while Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri boasts seven nominations. I’m really happy to see the love for Phantom Thread with nominations for Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actress, Costumes, and Original Score. I am bummed to think that Jake Gyllenhaal, Tatiana Maslany, Tiffany Haddish, Holly Hunter, Armie Hammer, and Michael Stuhlbarg all failed to received acting nominations for their work. Missing in action is Steven Spielberg and Wonder Woman, which failed to receive any nominations. Also, where is The Lego Batman Movie for Animated Feature. I was certain that would reign supreme over The Boss Baby.
Tune in to find out who will win on Sunday, March 4 on ABC.
