THE NAKED GUN
One of the funniest movies of the year is coming to Blu-Ray on Tuesday, November 11. Paramount Home Entertainment and Alliance Home Entertainment are set to release The Naked Gun on physical media. I know you need a good laugh, so go put in your pre-order and be ready for a barrel of laughs thanks to Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson.
The Naked Gun is pure buffoonery in its lampoon-style comedy. It opens with a bank heist similar to The Dark Knight, even right down to its score. We see a young girl skipping along entering the bank like any normal random girl would. BUT this is The Naked Gun, so she pulls off her mask and grows into Liam Neeson’s character, Frank Drebin Jr. As you can tell, director Akiva Shaffer and his writing team will go to any length for a laugh. If you’re familiar with The Naked Gun franchise, you’ll recognize that Neeson is playing the son of Leslie Nielsen’s character from the original trilogy. That’s one of the many reoccurring gags throughout the movie. Drebin’s bank heist stunt does not go over well with his boss, Chief Davis (CCH Pounder). He’s put onto another case, but trouble arises when the body of a tech engineer is found dead in his car at the bottom of a hill. It’s made to look like a suicide, but Drebin believes it is a murder and that the CEO of the company (Danny Huston) may be involved. Pamela Anderson takes over the femme fatale role, played by Priscilla Presley in the original trilogy.
The Naked Gun doesn’t necessarily concern itself with having an original story or interesting characters, as that’s not what people are coming for. They want the laughs, and Akiva Shaffer and his cast delivers. Everything is turned into a bit or a reoccurring gag. There’s something stupid and funny done in every season transition or even the act of Drebin drinking coffee all the time and throwing his cup on the ground wherever he is. Neeson seemed like odd casting when this reboot has announced, but he nails the comedy along with Pamela Anderson. Both are playing the serious nature of the situation, thus the laughs come out in its heightened style. I would be all here for a brand new franchise with this cast. Keep them coming!
