ELLEN GREEN INTERVIEW – LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
Little Shop of Horrors is one of the best movie musicals of all time thanks to its fun, spooky concept, incredible music, and endearing performances. Rick Moranis leads the film as the lovable and nerdy Seymour. He works at a flower and plant store under the gruff Mr. Mushnik. It’s located on the rundown area of New York known as Skid Row. The store is failing due to a lack of customers. Seymour’s co-worker Audrey (Ellen Greene) suggests that they display a funky plant Seymour recently picked up. He’s named it Audrey II, and it’s like the Venus fly trap and unlike any other plant they have. Customers start filing in, the store gets media attention, and Audrey II becomes a hit. Like all plants, Audrey II starts to die but Seymour accidentally finds out that this is a man-eating plant who loves human blood. He goes to drastic measures to make sure Audrey II is thriving a brings in the customers.
It was adapted from the off-Broadway musical of the same name which also featured Ellen Greene as Audrey. I had the great fortune to talk to Ellen Greene about the legacy of Little Shop, the collaboration between composers Alan Menken and Howard Ashman and more.
