ANORA
Director: Sean Baker
Starring: Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Lindsey Normington, Sophia Carnabuci, Karren Karagulian
The new film Anora has already won over film festival audiences and won the Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Mikey Madison stars in the title role of Anora, who goes by the name Ani, when she’s working as an exotic dancer at a place called HeadQuarters. Her clientele runs the gamut of older rich gentlemen to younger men looking for their first lap dance. She’s great at her job and meets a young Russian man named Ivan (Eydelshteyn). His lap dance turns to exchanging phone numbers and Ani making a house call the next day. Ivan opens up that his real name is Vanya and comes from an incredibly wealthy and recognizable family name. The family mansion is huge with a gated front entrance and security guard. Ivan convinces Ani to buy her out for the week to be his girlfriend as he throws lavish parties and lounges around playing video games. Ani and Ivan’s relationship moves from sex worker and client to an engagement within a week. It’s a wild move that takes a drastic turn once Ivan’s parents find out and threaten to stop their marriage at all costs. In theaters
