Paul Schrader may best be known for films like Taxi Driver and American Gigolo, but his latest films First Reformed, The Card Counter, and now Master Gardener have become this unofficial trilogy on similar themes surrounding self-reflection. Joel Edgerton stars as the title character, Narvel Roth. He runs and cares for the gardens at the estate of Sigourney Weaver’s character, Norma Haverhill. She informs him that her grandniece Maya (Swindell) used to love the gardens as a kid but has grown up and gotten in with the wrong crowds. Norma is her only remaining family and feels it necessary for Narvel to take her in and teach her the ways of the garden in hopes of steering her back on the right track in life. Now in theaters
