NIGHTBITCH

Director: Marielle Heller
Starring: Amy Adams, Scoot McNairy, Zoë Chao, Mary Holland, Archana Rajan

There are many films about the rollercoaster ride of parenting, but the new film Nightbitch starring Amy Adams takes a different approach at that topic. It’s based off the novel by Rachel Yoder, and Amy Adams’ character is only credited in the film as Mother. Scoot McNairy is only credited as Husband, not Father. That should give you insight into the roles they have within their marriage and parenthood. Mother made the decision to leave her job at an art gallery to be a stay-at-home mom when their son was born. Husband works and is frequently away from the home putting most of the burden and responsibilities on Mother. She has hit the end of her rope feeling all the stress and pressure. At the grocery store, an old friend tries to say it must be so wonderful to be a full-time mom. Internally, Mother says, “I’m stuck inside a prison of my own creation.” Writer/director Marielle Heller uses voice over narration to convey all of Mother’s inner monologues that she’s too afraid to let out. She’s a self-diagnosed hypochondriac who believes she’s going through perimenopause. Something stranger is going on with Mother as she starts to grow extra hair, her smell is heightened, and she’s attracting dogs. Yes, she’s turning into a dog much in the way she say she turns into a bitch at night. In theaters
