Everyone knows the name Donald Trump, but there’s probably a whole generation or two who do not know the name Roy Cohn. Whether you know their names or not, it’s worth exploring their unique friendship in The Apprentice. The film wisely takes its name from Donald Trump’s television series, but it’s not about the behind the scenes machinations of a reality show. Instead, it’s showing how Trump basically becoming an apprentice of sorts under famed attorney Roy Cohn. Sebastian Stan plays the former president. In Trump’s younger years we see him obsessed with rich, notable people. He’s scanning around a bar and lounge looking to see who’s there and who he can schmooze with. He wants to sound impressive for his date. Roy Cohn (Strong) spots Trump from afar and decides to take him under his wings. Everyone knows who Cohn his from his days working for Joseph McCarthy and for his work on Rosenberg’s trial. He’s ruthless. Donald is a landlord facing a discriminatory lawsuit and hires Cohn to work his case. In the meantime, he’s desperate to build the glorious and glamorous Trump Hotel. Roy’s “3 Rules of Winning” become the groundwork of the person we have come to know of Donald. In theaters
