THE DELIVERANCE

Director: Lee Daniels
Starring: Andra Day, Glenn Close, Mo’Nique, Demi Singleton, Caleb McLaughlin, Anthony B. Jenkins, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Omar Epps

Lee Daniels is the Oscar-nominated director behind movies like Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire and the TV series Empire. He’s turning to the horror genre with his new film The Deliverance. Andra Day reteams with Lee Daniels after their film The United States vs Billie Holiday. Day plays Ebony Jackson, a single mom of three kids who is just trying to give them a good life despite everything stacked against them. The kids’ father is serving in Iraq, while Ebony struggles with alcohol issues. Her mother, Alberta (Close), has moved in with them to help, but she’s mouthy, opinionated and battling cancer. Ebony’s temper gets the best of her as she fights with her case worker (Mo’nique) to prove she is providing a good home for her kids. On top of these headaches, her new basement appears infested with bugs and a dead cat. That’s just the beginning, as there’s an evil spirit down there that starts possessing her children one by one. Streaming on Netflix
