WEIRD: THE AL YANKOVIC STORY
Director: Eric Appel
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Evan Rachel Wood, Rainn Wilson, Julianne Nicholson, Arturo Castro, Toby Huss, Diedrich Bader
There’s no other artist out there like Weird Al Yankovic, and there’s no other rock biopic like Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. It’s said early on that “Life is like a parody of your favorite song.” This comes from the movie’s narrator with that super serious “In a world…” voice. Right then and there, director Eric Appel sets the exact tone of this movie. We see a young Al Yankovic listening to Doctor Demento (Wilson) with a Mad Magazine poster on his wall. His world changes when a traveling salesman gives him his first accordion. He has to keep it a secret from his tough, forceful dad. Now as an adult, played by Daniel Radcliffe, he is encouraged by his buddies to write songs. As he’s making sandwiches, the song My Sharona comes on the radio and the lyrics to My Bologna come out of him. It becomes a huge hit leading to more songs, a massive career, a relationship with Madonna (Wood) and a dangerous run in with Pablo Escobar (Castro). Now streaming on The Roku Channel
