DIE MY LOVE
Lynn Ramsey’s new film Die My Love is a tough watch but tackles a sensitive subject in a beautiful and thought-provoking manner. It’s now available to own on 4K and Blu-Ray thanks to MUBI and Alliance Home Entertainment
Jennifer Lawrence gives an incredible performance as Grace who recently welcomed a baby with her husband, Jackson (Robert Pattinson). They live in a secluded area out in the middle of nowhere as they remodel Jackson’s childhood home. It feels like a fresh start for both of them at a time in their life when everything is changing. They’re a rough and wild couple, and Grace starts getting restless in their new location while battling postpartum depression. They’re both writers struggling with work and inspiration while caring for a new child. Grace’s mental state worsens with no sign of adapting to her new life.
Lynn Ramsey wrote and directed the film based on Ariana Harwicz’s novel. She adapted it with Enda Walsh and Alice Birch. They’ve treated this film like poetry on screen oftentimes choosing a visual language to represent Grace’s unraveling and destruction. It features a slice of life narrative that many women out there can probably relate to if they have also struggled with postpartum depression. We’ve seen Jennifer Lawrence portray characters on the verge of mental decline in films like Silver Linings Playbook and Americna Hustle. With Die My Love, she’s going deeper and finding the complexities that come with motherhood. She and Pattinson give physically and emotionally charged performances and go to the depths of where these characters take them. Ramsey and Lawrence collaborate intricately on how to portray Grace’s unraveling without it feeling forced or rushed. It’s a nuanced director/actor collaboration with sensitive choices made along the way. Sissy Spacek and Nick Nolte also star as Jackson’s parents.
