MEAN GIRLS (2004) and MEAN GIRLS (2024)
Paramount Home Entertainment is celebrating 20 years of Mean Girls with the release of both Mean Girls films on a new 4K Ultra HD/Blu-Ray release on April 30th, 2004. The 2004 movie comes with a special “Burn Book” sleeve and both release have fun special feature and a digital copy of the films. I can’t believe it’s been 20 years of Regina telling Gretchen, “Stop trying to make fetch happen.” There were so many quotable one-liners from writer Tina Fey that have become part of pop culture history. The original film has become a cult classic and proved Lindsay Lohan to be a big teen star. She played Cady who moved from Africa to California with her family. She’s incredibly smart but has to acclimate to a new school, new friends, and a new clique. She friends outsiders Damian (Daniel Franzese) and Janis Ian (Lizzy Kaplan) who convince her to friend an infiltrate a clique of mean girls known as The Plastics. Rachel McAdams led the Plastics as Queen Bee Regina George alongside the aloof Karen (Amanda Seyfried) and perky Gretchen (Lacey Chabert).
Special Features for the 2004 movie:
- Mean Girls: Class of ’04—Tina Fey and cast from the new movie look back at the original film and discuss why it became a cult classic. NEW!
- Commentary – director Mark Waters, screenwriter and actress Tina Fey, and producer Lorne Michaels

The success of Mean Girls led to a 2018 Broadway musical that also became a smash hit. High schools all across the country are now performing the musical that comes with a fun pop-inspired score and reaches an all new generation of teens. The Broadway musical has now been adapted into a movie musical with Tina Fey returning as screenwriter. It’s hard to top the original, but the new cast completely made these characters their own, and you really feel like the material has been updated to meet teens where they’re at in 2024 versus 2004 and what it means to be a mean girl in the era of social media, online videos, TikTok, etc… Reneé Rapp absolutely slayed as Regina George, and Auli’i Cravalho blew me away with her vocals as Janis Ian.
