BABYGIRL
One of my favorite actresses working today is Nicole Kidman. It’s a real treat adding her new film, Babygirl, to my collection. A24 is releasing the film on Blu-Ray and DVD on March 25, 2025. Kidman and co-star Harris Dickson had audiences abuzz thanks to its tantalizing premise and the unique look it has on sexual desires. Writer and director Halina Reijn (Bodies Bodies Bodies) has a fresh voice for storytelling, and I’m really looking forward to what she does next. I also felt Reijn calling back to Kidman’s previous film Eyes Wide Shut from Stanley Kubrick, which also tackled sex, desire, and pushed the boundaries in storytelling.
Babygirl is told through the female lens and has a bit of a role reversal from what we’re used to seeing on screen and in the headlines. Kidman stars as Romy Mathis, the CEO of a tech company that utilizes warehouse robotics similar to Amazon. She has power, status, a terrific marriage to her husband, Jacob (Antonio Banderas), and has two daughters. She catches the eye of Harris Dickinson’s character, Samuel, after an encounter on the sidewalk. He also happens to be a new intern at her company. Samuel seems to sneak his way into every element of her life from a mentorship program to one-on-one moments in the elevator and on a balcony. Soon a sexual relationship transpires as Romy tests the limits of what’s acceptable in and outside of her marriage, especially with someone much younger than her.
