Writer/director Mike Flanagan is one of the great Stephen King adapters with turning his bestsellers into smart films with movies like Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep. Now he’s turned to King’s short story, The Life of Chuck, and the result is a deeply moving film. The Life of Chuck won the highly coveted audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024. The story is told backward in its timeline starting with Act 3. Chiwetel Ejiofor stars Marty Anderson, an English teacher who is trying to keep it together for his few remaining students and their parents. It’s potentially the end of the world, as the internet may be down for good, earthquakes and wildfires are destroying the planet, and parts of California are breaking off. Marty keeps seeing signs around town that say “Charles Krantz, 39 Great Years. Thanks, Chuck.” But the question around town is “who is Charles Krantz?” In Act 2, we meet Tom Hiddleston as Charles Krantz, an ordinary businessman with a deep appreciation for dance. The Life of Chuck takes a look at those small moments in life that may seem like nothing in the moment but have a larger impact on those around us.
Mike Flanagan and Stephen King are known for the horror genre, but The Life of Chuck stretches them both outside horror into a place of life-affirming, deeply impactful storytelling. This story reminds you of the moving emotions contained in The Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me, or The Green Mile. One of the major themes in this film is the notion that we contain multitudes and that some of the minor choices we make in life or those smaller moments can have a big impact on those around us, and we may not even know about it. Flanagan incorporates his usual ensemble of actors like Kate Siegel, Samantha Sloyan, Mark Hamill, Rahul Kohli, and more, while Tom Hiddleston, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matthew Lillard, and Mia Sara join the “Flana-fam”.
