CHALLENGERS
My favorite movie of 2024 is now available to buy on Blu-Ray and digital. Unfortunately, there is no 4K release with this one. I first saw Challengers on an IMAX screen in Los Angeles and felt like I was in the world that director Luca Guadagnino created. It became one of those movies that people told me they saw it because of my recommendation, and they loved it and were glad they took a chance on it.
It was one of the most buzzed about movies of the year upon its release thanks to its tantalizing premise and impeccable filmmaking. I don’t think I’ve seen a tennis movie as exhilarating as this, but director Luca Guadagnino and his creative team are firing on adrenaline with this story of passion, friendship, and being the best. Zendaya (coming off of the massive success of Dune Part Two) plays Tashi Duncan, a renowned tennis player whose career was cut short after an injury. She’s married to Art Donaldson (Faist) who is also a hot name in the game. They’re a power couple on and off the court as Tashi is Art’s coach. The Challenger match is approaching in New Rochelle, New York and the outcome could mean qualifying to the US Open. Slipping into the Challenger match at the last minute is Josh O’Connor as Patrick Zweig. He’s another hot competitor and as the film progresses, we learn the complicated relationship and friendship between him, Tashi, and Art.
SPECIAL FEATURES
-NONE!
I’m so bummed there are no special features or any extra supplements with this release. I would love to dive into the making of every technical aspect of this film with how it was achieved. The cinematography, the editing, the score! All impeccable. I’m hoping that may come with a future release with a different distributor or 4K release. I hope this isn’t a sign that physical media is dying out and becoming bare bones releases.
