Paul McGuire Grimes Presents: GOOD WILL HUNTING

I still remember seeing Good Will Hunting in the theaters back in 1997. Pretty sure it was at the AMC Southdale. It was in a box office and award season dominated by Titanic, but Good Will Hunting became the little indie film that could. The Miramax title was written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck who were fairly unknown actors at the time despite some early credits in movies like Courage Under Fire and Chasing Amy. Their screenplay felt fresh, bold, and original. Damon stars as Will Hunting, an MIT janitor, whose run-ins with the law leads to him being forced to see a psychiatrist to appeal to the rules of his parole. After many failed attempts to find someone who can break through to him, he meets Sean Maguire, played by Robin Williams. It’s the role that finally won Williams an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The film boasts terrific performances from Damon, Williams, Minnie Driver and a wonderful collection of music from Elliott Smith’s beautiful songs to Danny Elfman’s score.

I’m showing Good Will Hunting as part of my monthly movie series at Emagine Theaters Eagan. Get tickets today and come see it Sunday, March 24 at 3:00pm. Stick around afterwards for a discussion, and we can talk about why it continues to inspire us all these years later.
