MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS
My monthly movie series at Emagine Theaters “Paul McGuire Grimes Presents” has been a big hit, and it’s been so rewarding seeing these movies back on the big screen with a fun audience. I lead a discussion after every screening, and it’s a real treat getting to talk about these films as a group afterwards.
I am closing out 2023 with the Judy Garland classic, Meet Me in St. Louis, this Sunday, December 17 at 3:00 at their Eagan location. The 1944 film is an underrated movie musical that is sometimes forgotten around the Christmas season. While the story itself spans a year in the life of the Smith family, the climax finds Judy Garland’s character, Esther, singing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” to her younger sister, Tootie (Margaret O’Brien). The film also features the classic songs, “The Trolley Song” and the title song. The film is based on the autobiographical writings of Sally Benson, “5135 Kensington”, which were a series of vignettes about her family.
Judy Garland and director Vincent Minnelli fell in love on set and got married shortly afterwards and give birth to their daughter, Liza.
