It’s been ten years since I became a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (now called Critics Choice Association) when I was accepted in 2015! It’s wild to think its been that long. I love being a part of such a lauded and accomplished organization that continues to grow and evolve each year. 2024 marked the first year of the Celebration of LGBTQ+ Film and Television. I am so proud to be a member of that planning committee.

For the big award celebration this year, Anora took home the top prize for Best Picture, which came as a shock to me as I thought The Brutalist was this year’s favorite. I loved seeing Jon M. Chu win Best Director for Wicked, and I’m still annoyed he didn’t receive an Oscar nomination. The acting winners of Adrian Brody, Demi Moore, Zoe Saldaña, and Kieran Culkin followed in line with the Golden Globes, and I do see the four of them being the frontrunners at the SAG Awards and the Oscars. I was also happy to see Challengers win for Best Editing and Best Score despite a complete shut out of Oscar nominations.

So what does this mean for the rest of awards season? Anora was also a big winner this weekend taking home Best Picture at the Producers Guild Awards. That is typically a very strong predictor of what will win Best Picture at the Oscars. Eight of the last ten winners went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Sean Baker also won Best Director for Anora at the Directors Guild Awards. The last nine of ten directors would go on to win Best Director at the Oscars.

It’s always a real treat to be a voting member even if my picks don’t always win! Look for more information soon on the 2nd Annual Celebration LGBTQ+ Film and Television.
