The 2016 Cecil B. DeMille Awards was presented to Denzel Washington

It was another interesting and slightly unpredictable year at the Golden Globes. Per usual most of the celebs were drunk by the time they got up to present or accept their award. The movie winners were not as random as the television winners, so I’m going to stay focused on the movie winners. It’s always good to remember that this is the Hollywood Foreign Press Association voting, so I think that plays a factor into some films winning over others. In most circles it seemed like Spotlight would win for Best Picture Drama, but it lost to The Revenant. Spotlight’s subject matter may have seemed too domestic for a global reach. Plus, it’s not always a clear lock on the Oscars. Last year Richard Linklater won for directing Boyhood. Neither he nor the film went on to win the Oscar. Coincidentally enough, he lost to Alejandro González Iñárritu who won the Golden Globe for The Revenant. Sylvester Stallone seemed to be a favorite for Supporting Actor. He received a big standing ovation, so I think there’s a sentimentality there with him being in the business for as long as he has and resurrecting a crowd pleasing character. Kate Winslet won for Best Supporting Actress for Steve Jobs. Hard to tell yet if she will win the Oscar as Rooney Mara (Carol) or Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) could be thrown into that category. The Golden Globes nominated them in lead, but the SAG Awards have them in supporting. Frankly, their roles qualify as leads. Another big winner was The Martian in the Comedy/Musical category. I totally get that the movie is funny as the film had a witty script and Matt Damon can deliver some good one-liners. However, I would not place it in the Comedy/Musical category. It’s another case of category fraud. Same goes for Jennifer Lawrence’s win for Joy. I really thought Amy Schumer would win for Trainwreck as that movie is actually a comedy.

It was a bizarre year for the Golden Globes. I still don’t feel like I know who could go home with Oscar. Leonardo DiCaprio is probably the only frontrunner at this point. Let’s hope next year’s gets a little more on track. At least, Ricky Gervais was as naughty and biting as ever.
