There you have it! Those are the nominations for the 2025 Oscars! Let’s be real. It’s been an odd award season to be celebrating the movies given Los Angeles has seen so much destruction with the wild fires. I think the attention and resources have been placed there instead of the usual campaigning, marketing, and money spent pushing voters to see eligible films. Emilia Pérez was the most nominated film with 13 nominations including Best Picture, Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Actress (Karla Sofia Gascón), and Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña). The Brutalist and Wicked both scored 10 nominations. That doesn’t surprise me given the sheer love of those films from an acting and crafts perspective. I was very surprised to see Jon M. Chu miss out on a directing nomination for Wicked, as he was such a guiding force in every element of that film. Big name actors like Angelina Jolie, Denzel Washington, Pamela Anderson, Nicole Kidman, and Jamie Lee Curtis all missed out on nominations. That Best Actress category was a huge race this year, as you could pick five other rightfully deserving performances to be there. Movies like Challengers, The Last Showgirl, Babygirl, The Piano Lesson, and Queer received zero nominations despite being nominated at other award ceremonies. Sing Sing had some early buzz this year and looked to be a favorite but that died down and just didn’t get the campaigning and eyeballs that it deserved. I truly think it deserved a Best Picture nomination (and possible win) as it was that good, that important, and has universal appeal behind it.
