LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND
Director: Sam Esmail
Starring: Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, Myha’la, Charlie Evans, Farrah Mackenzie, Kevin Bacon
A movie that looks into the end of days can be quite thrilling headspace to live in, but you need a keen eye and thoughtfully executed plan of attack to make it pop. The new Netflix film Leave the World Behind can’t quite get there. We’ve all been there before where we just need a break from our daily routine. Much like Julia Roberts’ character, Amanda Sanford, she wants to leave the world behind for a quick little impromptu getaway with her family. She packs her bags, rents an AirBnB for her husband, Clay (Hawke), and takes her kids to a gorgeous house in Long Island. A day at the beach is the first sign something is happening in the world that can’t be explained. A big oil tanker crashes onto the beach. No one is hurt, but it shouldn’t have happened. Later that night, there’s a black out, wifi is down and the television and radio signals go out. There’s a knock at the door with the arrival of Mahershala Ali’s character G.H. and his daughter, Ruth, claiming they are the owners of the house and now need shelter. It seems innocent, but Amanda doesn’t trust them. They wade out the night, but the next day proves just as strange and abnormal with hordes of deer appearing in the background, there’s a mysterious shed, and flyers dropping from a high flying drone.
