Imagine a world where the Beatles didn’t exist. Trust me, it feels strange and I don’t like it. That serves as the catalyst for Danny Boyle’s new film, Yesterday. Jack Malik (Patel) is an aspiring singer/songwriter. He plays small little pubs and festivals in England but is ready to throw in the towel on his career. A power surge hits the planet shutting off every light and piece of electricity for 18 seconds. At just that precise moment of time Jack is hit by a bus when cycling home from a music festival. He survives with a few bumps and bruises and is missing a few teeth. When he starts to reference the Beatles music to his manager friend Ellie (James), she gets confused but he brushes it off. He goes on to play “Yesterday” for his friends to find out they’ve never heard of it. A quick Google search leads to zero results for the most iconic band of all time. It’s as if they never existed in the first place, but he still remembers some of the lyrics and guitar riffs. Jack uses this knowledge to bolster his career by passing off Beatles music as his own original hits garnering the attention of Ed Sheeran and a Los Angeles-based manager (McKinnon).
