ALTMAN AT THE TRYLON

Confession time. Robert Altman is one of those directors that I don’t know as well as I should. Yes, I watched Popeye as a kid and I went and saw A Prairie Home Companion when it was released. I’ve somehow missed out on a majority of the other films for which he is better known. Last year my interest perked up when I watched 3 Women at the Trylon Microcinema as part of their Sissy Spacek series. I have no idea what happened in that movie as it’s a trippy story featuring Spacek and Altman regular Shelley Duvall. What I do remember is how it stuck with me afterwards for months on end.

Altman has popped up in my life so randomly this year that I consider it a sign from the cinema gods that I need to really dive deep into his filmography. Earlier this year I watched a documentary on him on Netflix, and just recently I picked up the audiobook of “Robert Altman: The Oral Biography” by Mitchell Zuckoff from my local library. Just a few weeks ago, the Trylon announced their fall lineup with four of his films coming up in September. Now, I have no excuse to miss out on these Altman essentials.
