THE NINTH ANNUAL HITCHCOCK FILM FESTIVAL

THE NINTH ANNUAL HITCHCOCK FILM FESTIVAL Take-Up Productions has brought back their Hitchcock Film Festival for another year. It’s always a joy to see the Master of Suspense back up on the big screen, and this year they have some of his very best playing. Rear Window is a personal favorite of mine. A few years ago I caught their presentation of Vertigo in 70mm, and it was well worth it. They partner with the Heights Theater and the Riverview Theater each year and bring in a rousing crowd. You’ll hear people applaud during his cameos or when Bernard Herrmann or Edith Head’s names appearRead More →

Take-Up Productions Presents: JOAN VS BETTE

Take-Up Productions Presents: JOAN VS BETTE The fine folks over at Take-Up Productions have fantastic programming coming up this summer. You may recall how I spotlight their Hitchcock Festival every year. They are partnering with the Heights Theater in Columbia Heights for their Trylon Roadshow devotion to two of the biggest divas and legendary actresses of the silver screen, Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. Each actress will have two films shown and it culminates with their one and only on-screen pairing in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Here’s the lineup DARK VICTORY (1939) – Bette Thursday May 29 7:30 35mm presentation   DANCING LADY (1933) – JoanRead More →

THE MINNEAPOLIS HITCHCOCK FESTIVAL

THE MINNEAPOLIS HITCHCOCK FESTIVAL It’s that time of the year again where the fine folks at Take-Up Productions present their annual Hitchcock festival. I probably say this every year, but they have another great slate of films from the Master of Suspense. It opens Thursday, April 14 with a film considered by many as his crowning achievement, Vertigo. Once again, it’s being present in glorious 70mm. I saw it in this format last year, and it’s stunning. You don’t want to miss out on this opportunity. Strangers on a Train, another one of my favorites, is also showing half way through the festival. Here isRead More →

ALTMAN AT THE TRYLON

ALTMAN AT THE TRYLON Confession time. Robert Altman is one of those directors that I don’t know as well as I should. Yes, I watched Popeye as a kid and I went and saw A Prairie Home Companion when it was released. I’ve somehow missed out on a majority of the other films for which he is better known. Last year my interest perked up when I watched 3 Women at the Trylon Microcinema as part of their Sissy Spacek series. I have no idea what happened in that movie as it’s a trippy story featuring Spacek and Altman regular Shelley Duvall. What I doRead More →

THE MINNEAPOLIS HITCHCOCK FESTIVAL

THE MINNEAPOLIS HITCHCOCK FESTIVAL       Trylon takes pride in the fact that they are the Twin Cities classic film specialists. Every year they partner with the Riverview Theater and Heights Theater to present a variety of films from the Master of Suspense himself, Alfred Hitchcock. He is one of my favorite directors, so I always think it’s a treat to see his films on the big screen whenever opportunity arises. No matter how many times I’ve seen some of these, they never get old and I usually notice something new with each viewing. Plus, we will get those classic Bernard Herrmann scores, SaulRead More →

DEAR READERS

DEAR READERS, This weekend brings a few more releases that you may find a bit lackluster. I was not able to attending any screenings of 3 Days to Kill starring Kevin Costner or Pompeii starring “Game of Thrones” hunk Kit Harington, so I cannot report whether they are worth your time, effort, and hard earned money. The Oscars are less than 10 days away, so it is time to get scrambling if you are feeling behind. There are some documentaries and foreign films I still need to check out. Check back for reviews of those to come soon! If you are feeling behind, I wouldRead More →

DEAR READERS

DEAR READERS, You may have noticed that I have bit a bit sparse lately on some of the new releases that have it your local multiplex. You may have checked in for my thoughts on the likes of Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, The Nut Job, I, Frankenstein, or even Labor Day. I do love me some Kate Winslet, so tonight I will be seeing Labor Day . A review of that will be coming soon. George Clooney’s latest,The Monuments Men, opens this weekend. Hopefully, I can check that one off the list as well. The January/February months at the theater tend to be a bitRead More →
