BLITZ
Director: Steve McQueen
Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Elliott Heffernan, Harris Dickinson, Stephen Graham, Benjamin Clémentine
Steve McQueen is the Oscar winning director of films like 12 Years a Slave and Widows. With his latest film, Blitz, he’s taking his turn at a telling a World War II story and tells it from a child’s perspective. It’s September 1940 in London during a blitzkrieg which is thought of as a lightning war. The British are prepping for an attack from the Germans, and children become the most vulnerable population. Saoirse Ronan plays Rita, a single mom to her son, George (Elliott Heffernan), who sends him off on a train for his own protection and safety. She’s desperately trying to do what’s best for her son no matter how hard it is or whether or not she will see him again. While she returns to her life working in a factory, he jumps from the train and risks everything to head back home as he can’t bear to be away from his mother and grandfather.
