HAMNET
Director: Chloé Zhao
Starring: Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal, Joe Alwyn, Emily Watson, Jacobi Jupe, Noah Jupe
Chloé Zhao is the Oscar-winning director behind Nomadland, and now she’s back with Hamnet. It’s a breathtaking and heartbreaking story that’s one of the best movies of the year. It’s the late 16th Century in the middle of the English countryside, an hour outside of London. There’s an instant attraction between Jessie Buckley’s character, Agnes, and Paul Mescal’s character, Will. One might say they are star-crossed lovers as his family is vehemently against their union. Will is a Latin tutor, but his father doesn’t think much of his profession. And there are rumors circulating that Agnes is a forest witch. Agnes and Will start having children, daughters Susannah and Judith, and a son, named Hamnet. Tragedy strikes their family, and Will starts losing himself into his working leaving for London to be a playwright. It’s easier for him to process grief by writing a new tragedy for the stage, while Agnes is at home processing her own grief. In theaters
