LITTLE WOMEN
Writer/Director: Greta Gerwig
Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern, Meryl Streep, Timothée Chalamet, Bob Odenkirk, Chris Cooper
There have been many page to screen adaptations of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. Winona Ryder earned an Oscar nomination for her take on Jo March next to Susan Sarandon’s Marmee. In the new adaptation by Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), Saoirse Ronan tackles Jo with Laura Dern as her loving mother, Marmee. Florence Pugh (Amy), Emma Watson (Meg), and Eliza Scanlen (Beth) join her as her fellow March sisters. We cannot forget about Meryl Streep playing their stern aunt. And just when you thought this cast couldn’t get any better, Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name) steps into the role of beloved neighbor Laurie.
We read the book recently in our book club, and I am eagerly anticipating seeing this ensemble bring these characters to life under Gerwig’s strong voice as a writer and director. There are tragic moments in the story, but the movie looks so sweet and lovely and perfect for the Christmas holiday season.
