The Golden Globes have struggled over the last couple of years to remain relevant due to a lack of diversity in members despite the members being named the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Due to this, the HFPA was disbanded and reorganized. Their efforts to recalibrate have been the talk of conversation and thus the award ceremony moved to CBS under Dick Clark Productions. This year’s ceremony featured comedian Jo Koy as its host and hoped to celebrate a wonderful year in film and television. It pains me to say that the opening monologue started off about as rough as possible as Koy failed to draw in the laughs from the seated crowd or those watching at home. He is a bit of an unknown talent despite his film Easter Sunday, stand up performances, or appearances on Chelsea Lately. The writing of the jokes and jabs toward Taylor Swift, Ryan Gosling, Robert De Niro and more just fell flat for which Koy then blamed other writers. He seemed apologetic and embarrassed reminding the audience he got the job ten days ago. Not only was the writing of the monologue bad, but the banter written for presenters often didn’t work either. Some pairings didn’t make sense, some banter went on for way too long. Kevin Costner mentally seemed somewhere else while presenting with America Ferrera in a bit regarding her Barbie monologue.
Oppenheimer was the big winner of the night taking home five Golden Globes. I love the wins for Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr, both long overdue in the industry. I didn’t think of them to be the lead in their categories, but this should boost their chances for the of rest of award season. The night also proved victorious for Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Lily Gladstone. I would not be surprised if we see Randolph sweep the rest of award season.
