It’s basically Christmas morning as the Oscar nominations have been announced. I look forward to this morning every year regardless of how I’ve felt about the crop of films in contention. More on that in a little bit. Let’s start with some good news. The Favourite (one of my favorite movies of the  year) leads the pack with 10 nominations including: Best Picture, Director (Yorgos Lanthimos), Actress (Olivia Colman), Supporting Actress (Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz), Best Original Screenplay and more. A Star is Born also did really well with 8 nominations for Best Picture, Actor (Bradley Cooper), Actress (Lady Gaga), Supporting Actor (Sam Elliott),  Adapted Screenplay and more. Cooper is nominated for three awards as a producer, actor, and writing the film. He was most notably left out of the race for Best Director. I’m really excited to see BlacKkKlansman earn six nominations for Best Picture, Director (Spike Lee), Supporting Actor (Adam Driver), Adapted Screenplay, and more. I was really hoping for a nomination for its star John David Washington, but he missed out in the Best Actor category.

Let’s now look at some surprises/snubs. Emily Blunt could have received two nominations for her work in Mary Poppins Returns and A Quiet Place. She received SAG Award nominations for both films, but was completely shut out for an Oscar nomination. Nicole Kidman was poised to be nominated for her work in either Destroyer or Boy Erased but missed out on both films. Timothée Chalamet received Critics Choice, Golden Globe, SAG, and BAFTA nominations but was left out of the Oscar race for his role in Beautiful Boy. I would have also loved to have seen nominations for Toni Collette (Hereditary) and Ethan Hawke (First Reformed). Other snubs include Won’t You Be My Neighbor? for Best Documentary and Justin Hurwitz for Best Score (First Man) Hurwitz won the Golden Globe for his score.

ROMA was a huge favorite going into this morning and even surprised some with acting nominations for Best Actress (Yalitza Aparicio) and Supporting Actress (Marina de Tavira). The film walked away with 10 nominations including many for its director Alfonso Cuaron who was also nominated for Best Director, Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Foreign Film, and Best Cinematography.

This marks the first year that I can remember that I dislike a few of the Best Picture nominees. Eight films were nominated for Best Picture wherein recently when we’ve seen nine or ten nominated. I’m excited to see films like Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, The Favourite, Roma, and A Star is Born receive nominations. I’m truly baffled by the support and accolades for Bohemian Rhapsody and Vice. Green Book is another understandably divisive film and walked away the Producer’s Guild Award the other night. It should be noted that its director Peter Ferrelly did not receive a Best Director nomination. Thse are just some initial reactions to this morning’s nominations.
