David Fincher’s Mank led the Oscar nominations with 10 overall nominations including Best Picture, Director (Fincher), Actor (Gary Oldman), Supporting Actress (Amanda Seyfried) and a variety of production categories. I still feel like Nomadland will win Best Picture with Chloe Zhao also winning for Best Director. Zhao was a four-time nominee for her work on this film also receiving nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing.

I was hoping for some love for Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods which was shut out for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and even Delroy Lindo failed to garner a Best Actor nomination. A travesty in my book. Its sole nomination came for Terence Blanchard’s score. Other surprises include Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and One Night in Miami missing out from Best Picture. Regina King had lots of love heading into this morning, but failed to receive a Best Director nomination for One Night in Miami.

Judas and the Black Messiah was nominated for six Oscars including Best Picture and two supporting actor nominations for Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield. Stanfield’s category placement was a surprise given he was campaigning for Best Actor. Surprised director Shaka King didn’t get a directing nomination, but received one for Best Original Screenplay.

I would have loved to have seen more love for Black-led and created films in the Best Picture and Director categories, but overall diversity is better than we’ve seen in past years. What are your thoughts in this year’s nominees? Let me know on Twitter and Instagram. @PAULSMOVIETRIP
