Movie Review: THE LITTLE THINGS

THE LITTLE THINGS Director: John Lee HancockStarring: Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, Jared Leto, Natalie Morales, Chris Bauer, Jason James Richter, Terry Kinney When Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto all star you the same movie, you hope for a heavy film that packs a punch. Their new film The Little Things will have you on edge. Grisly true crime is all the rage right now, and while The Little Things isn’t based on a true story, it will scratch that itch for those waiting on a new season of your favorite podcast. Denzel Washington suits up as Sheriff Joe Deacon, who heads back toRead More →

THE 89th ACADEMY AWARDS – THE NOMINATIONS

THE 89th ACADEMY AWARDS – THE NOMINATIONS Here we go! This year’s Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and no one was surprised to hear La La Land lead the pack. The Academy loves movies about actors and Hollywood, and Damien Chazelle’s film is a tribute to the old MGM musicals. I posted my predictions yesterday and gave La La Land 14 nominations. My prediction was right on as it has tied Titanic and All About Eve with the most nominations. Coming in next is Moonlight and Arrival with 8 nominations and Manchester By the Sea with 6. If I had my choice, I’d giveRead More →

2016: A YEAR IN REVIEW

2016: A YEAR IN REVIEW 2016 was not the best year when it came to the selections at your local movie theater. The spring brought out it the usual duds, the summer season was wildly disappointing, and the fall had a few great films to try and redeem itself. Big blockbuster movies like X-Men: Apocalypse, Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, and The Divergent Series: Allegiant were not greeted with the same sort of enthusiasm upon it’s release. All four were disappointing in some regard. We also saw reboots and revivals of franchises with Ghostbusters, Jason Bourne, Bridget Jones’s Baby, and Blair Witch; some of them wereRead More →

Movie Review: FENCES

FENCES Director: Denzel Washington Starring: Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Mykelti Williamson, Stephen Henderson, Jovan Adepo, Russell Hornsby, Saniyya Sidney In 2010 Denzel Washington and Viola Davis starred in the Broadway revival of August Wilson’s play, Fences. They both went on to win the Tony Award for their performances as a married couple in 1950s Pittsburgh. Washington plays Troy Maxson, a former baseball player who was too old to go professional and now works as a trash collector. Viola Davis gives another knockout performance as his wife, Rose. While Troy is out at work, she is the typical housewife who makes sure there is food onRead More →

Movie Review: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Director: Antoine Fuqua Starring: Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Peter Sarsgaard, Byung-hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Haley Bennett, Matt Bomer, Luke Grimes Within the same month I’ve seen two new westerns that have hit the big screen. The first was Hell or High Water, which is currently resting toward the top of my year end best list. Now comes the release of the remake of The Magnificent Seven, a movie that will not be on that list. It’s the late 1800s and the small town of Rose Creek is facing a bit of a dust up when industrialistRead More →

Movie Review: THE EQUALIZER

THE EQUALIZER Director: Antoine Fuqua Starring: Denzel Washington, Marton Csokas, Chloë Grace Moretz, David Harbour, Bill Pullman, Melissa Leo Denzel Washington is back in another high-intensity action flick. How many of these has he done lately? This time he reteams with his Training Day director Antoine Fuqua. Robert McCall (Washington) spends most of his day stocking shelves or cutting wood at Home Mart (similar to Home Depot) and is a mentor toward another worker trying to get in shape for the security position. His nightly routine involves a stop at a local diner for a cup of tea and some reading time. He’s got aRead More →
