THE 89th ACADEMY AWARDS – THE NOMINATIONS

Here we go! This year’s Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and no one was surprised to hear La La Land lead the pack. The Academy loves movies about actors and Hollywood, and Damien Chazelle’s film is a tribute to the old MGM musicals. I posted my predictions yesterday and gave La La Land 14 nominations. My prediction was right on as it has tied Titanic and All About Eve with the most nominations. Coming in next is Moonlight and Arrival with 8 nominations and Manchester By the Sea with 6. If I had my choice, I’d give Best Picture to Moonlight over La La Land. In terms of the annual look at snubs, here’s who people are talking about: Golden Globe winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nocturnal Animals) for Best Supporting Actor, Amy Adams (Arrival) for Best Actress, Annette Bening (20th Century Women) for Best Actress, and Finding Dory for Best Animated Film . Let’s now turn our to the pleasant surprises. The Academy likes to throw in some curve balls just to keep it interesting. Happy to see Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals) for Best Supporting Actor, Mike Mills (20th Century Women) for Best Original Screenplay. In the end, I believe La La Land will walk home the big sweeping winner of the night. It’s been many years since one film swept the awards night. For comparison to last year, The Revenant received 12 nominations and walked home with three Oscars. Without further commentary, here are the nominations for the 2017 Oscars:
