John Candy will forever live in our hearts and pop culture zeitgeist thanks to his memorable movies and characters. He always feels so present despite the fact that it’s been 31 years since he passed away. The new documentary John Candy: I Like Me is a beautiful celebration of the actor. Have tissues ready as you’ll be crying within the first five minutes thanks to Dan Aykroyd’s eulogy at John’s funeral. Director Colin Hanks knows this is an emotional story and isn’t afraid to let this be cathartic for everyone involved. He takes the usual chronological timeline approach as he then rewinds back to John’s childhood of losing his own dad to a heart attack at the age of thirty-five and how that affected his family. He used the movies for escapism. He loved movies, sketch comedy and loved to make other people laugh. Those skills led to meeting Dan Aykroyd who got John into being a cast member of the Canadian troop Second City, that led to performing on SCTV, and the massive career that followed. Colin Hanks has a who’s who of friends and collaborators like Bill Murray, Catherine O’Hara, Marin Short, and Steve Martin and many more to share stories, laugh, and cry as they recall the characters and sketches that brought everyone joy.
