FRIDAY THE 13th PART 2
Are you a Jason Vorhees fiend? It’s been 45 years since the release of Friday the 13th Part 2 and Paramount Pictures and Alliance Home Entertainment are releasing the horror sequel on 4K, Blu-Ray and Digital to celebrate the savage carnage of Jason Vorhees. It’s also worth noting that we have a Friday the 13th in February, so now is the perfect time to stock up.
If you saw Scream you better remember Ghostface telling Casey Becker that is was Mrs. Vorhees who was the killer in the first Friday the 13th, not Jason. Jason finally makes his appearance as Part 2 picks up five years after the massacre at Camp Crystal Lake. Original Final Girl Adrienne King is back as Alice who is plagued with nightmares and visions of Mrs. Vorhees after barely surviving what happened. There’s a new group of camp counselors heading to Crystal Lake for a counselor training experience like a “Back to Basics” ordeal. Camp Crystal Lake is off limits, but they are all staying at a nearby camp on the same lake. Jason Vorhees is apparently out there. Is he thirsty for blood or is this all an urban campfire legend?
Friday the 13th Part 2 is your standard slasher film. All of the tropes and “Rules of Surviving a Horror Movie” as mentioned in Scream are all on display here. Horny characters, sex, alcohol, you name it and the characters become new victims of Jason Vorhees who finds his machete and the terror begins. There are a couple of fun characters, but none of them really stand out with fun personalities. It is great to see Betsy Palmer on screen again as Mrs. Vorhees. I don’t know about you, but I swear the score is borrowing liberally from Bernard Hermann’s score to Psycho. This sequel isn’t great, but it doesn’t stop them from expanding on the franchise and creating many more Jason scares after this. Director Steve Miner would go on to direct Friday the 13th Part 3 and Halloween H20 later in his career.
