DIGGER
Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu
Starring: Tom Cruise, John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Emma D’Arcy
Tom Cruise has spent the last decade of his career mainly doing action films like the Mission Impossible, Top Gun, and Jack Reacher movies. Now he’s reminding us of the actor he can be with Digger. This political satire has audiences divided. It’s the latest film from Oscar winner Alejandro González Iñárritu who also made Birdman and The Revenant. He’s never one to take it easy on the viewer, and the same can be said here. We meet Tom Cruise’s character, Digger Rockwell, laying in bed caring for his dying cat. He’s got a maid and a team around him who he beckons for as he takes emergency calls. He’s an oil tycoon who has been doing work in the Arctic. One of those calls is from a scientist with the grave warning that an ice melt has cracked off, methane is eroding the area, and this ice melt is now making its way to Europe at a rapid speed. It’s massive and could have catastrophic effects on the European population. John Goodman plays President Compson while Michael Stuhlbarg is his Vice President. They along with their military aides have been called in to assess the situation. Digger wants to be surrounded by YES men, not men delivering bad news. It’s a room full of irresponsible people, thinking they can pray about the situation or ignore it with AI to reframe the narrative and pretend it’s not happening. In theaters
