THE 89th ACADEMY AWARDS – THE NOMINATIONS

THE 89th ACADEMY AWARDS – THE NOMINATIONS Here we go! This year’s Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and no one was surprised to hear La La Land lead the pack. The Academy loves movies about actors and Hollywood, and Damien Chazelle’s film is a tribute to the old MGM musicals. I posted my predictions yesterday and gave La La Land 14 nominations. My prediction was right on as it has tied Titanic and All About Eve with the most nominations. Coming in next is Moonlight and Arrival with 8 nominations and Manchester By the Sea with 6. If I had my choice, I’d giveRead More →

Movie Review: LA LA LAND

LA LA LAND Writer/Director: Damien Chazelle Starring: Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, John Legend, J.K. Simmons, Rosemarie DeWitt, Josh Pence, Finn Wittrock Sometimes we look to the movies to provide escapism. We want to get away from our everyday life for whatever reason it may be. We can disappear into another world with relatable characters to live out some fantasy for two hours. La La Land will be that movie that sweeps you away from your troubles as you fall in love all over again with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Maybe it’s just the music theater side of me that geeked out over the beginningRead More →

Movie Review: WHIPLASH

WHIPLASH Writer/Director: Damien Chazelle Starring: Miles Teller, J.K. Simmons, Paul Reiser, Melissa Benoist, Nate Lang, Austin Stowell For someone that sees a plethora of movies every year, it’s always refreshing when one comes along that completely takes you by surprise. It becomes the movie that I want everyone to see. This summer it was Boyhood and now it’s Whiplash. Both films are smaller indies that will need word of mouth in order to attract a bigger audience as they aren’t dependent on the studio’s marketing budgets or big named actors to carry the weight. Miles Teller has started to make a name for himself afterRead More →
