MY REFLECTION ON ROGER

MY REFLECTION ON ROGER Originally written back on April 5, 2013. Reposting on the five year anniversary of his death. There are certain deaths from the film industry that have had a lasting impression on me. In 1993, I was only ten years old and I remember being heartbroken by the death of River Phoenix. Six years later, Stanley Kubrick and Gene Siskel died within weeks of each other. I still remember standing in my parents driveway reflecting on both of them at that time. I had just started delving into Kubrick’s films and Siskel, along with his partner-in-crime Roger Ebert, were my movie critics.Read More →

PAUL’S YEAR AT THE MOVIES: 2014 EDITION

PAUL’S YEAR AT THE MOVIES: 2014 EDITION Every year I like to take a look back at my year at the movies. I stole the idea from my friend Max who likes to list every new movie he sees in any given year. This year I sat down and watched 128 new movies. By new, I mean movies that I was seeing for the very first time, whether they were old classics or 2014 releases. 94 of those 128 were 2014 releases. According to my 2013 Edition, I saw 119 films 81 of which were 2013 releases. I suppose 128 is a decent number, butRead More →

THE BEST AND WORST OF SUMMER 2014

I don’t think the 2014 summer movie season will be remembered for the good movies that came out. Let’s face it, it seemed like each week we succumbed to some pretty disappointing movies at your local cineplex. Like every summer, we had our fare share of comic book movies, sequels, and reboots. There were big action franchises that wanted to continue their reign. Some fared well (X-Men: Days of Future Past), while others left us shaking our head in frustration (The Amazing Spider-Man 2). Here are my picks for the best and worst of the summer season, plus some that were pleasant surprises.THE BEST 1. BOYHOODRead More →

Movie Review: LIFE ITSELF

LIFE ITSELF Director: Steve James Starring: Roger Ebert, Chaz Ebert, Martin Scorsese, Werner Herzog, A.O. Scott, Richard Corliss, Gene Siskel In 1994, Roger Ebert was a huge champion of the documentary Hoop Dreams by director Steve James. He included the film in his top ten of 1994 list and later placed it in the top spot on his favorite films of the 1990s list. It is only fitting that James is the man behind the camera for a documentary about Ebert. As a film critic and movie lover, my days of reading Roger’s reviews and watching him spar with Gene Siskel go back as farRead More →

Movie Trailer: LIFE ITSELF

LIFE ITSELF Director: Steve James Starring: Roger Ebert, Chaz Ebert, Martin Scorsese, Werner Herzog One of Roger Ebert’s favorite movies from the ’90s was the documentary Hoop Dreams from director Steve James. It seems quite fitting that James has now made a documentary about the extraordinary life of one of the best film critics who had a tremendous impact on the film industry. Roger has been a huge inspiration to me ever since I was a young boy watching “At the Movies” every Saturday night. I own quite a few of his books, including his memoir, “Life Itself”, which this documentary is based on. LastRead More →
