Movie Review: THE UNITED STATES VS. BILLIE HOLIDAY

THE UNITED STATES VS. BILLIE HOLIDAY Director: Lee DanielsStarring: Andra Day, Trevante Rhodes, Garrett Hedlund, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Miss Lawrence, Natasha Lyonne, Leslie Jordan Andra Day won people over with her inspiring anthem “Rise Up” She’s making the leap to the big screen as songstress Billie Holiday in The United States vs Billie Holiday. In 1937, an anti-lynching bill fails to pass through Congress. Billie Holiday’s song “Strange Fruit” directly addresses the history of lynching which angered the Feds every time she attempted to perform it in clubs. Garrett Hedlund stars as Harry Anslinger who was the commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. HeRead More →

Movie Review: NOMADLAND

NOMADLAND Writer/Director: Chloé ZhaoStarring: Frances McDormand, David Strathairn, Linda May Frances McDormand could be headed for her third Oscar with Nomadland. As Fern, she finds her herself living out of her van after a slew of events left her homeless. Her husband passed away and the gypsum plant she worked at was shut down following the Great Recession. The recession killed the city of Empire, Nevada displacing many people. For Fern, it now means joining a group of van dwellers in the desert finding odd jobs here and there wherever she goes. Here’s my review And check out my interview with Chloé ZhaoRead More →

Movie Review: THE MAURITANIAN

THE MAURITANIAN Director: Kevin MacdonaldStarring: Tahar Rahim, Jodie Foster, Shailene Woodley, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zachary Levi Two months after 9/11, Mohamedou Slahi played here by Tahar Rahim, was taken in for questioning as he was thought to be a recruiter for the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center. We learn that he was taken to Guantanamo Bay where he has been detained since then. It’s now 2005 when Nancy Hollander, a criminal defense lawyer played by Jodie Foster, learns of his story. She along with her associate Teri, played by Shailene Woodley attempt to file a Habeus Corpus to determine if there’s enough evidence againstRead More →

Movie Review: BARB AND STAR GO TO VISTA DEL MAR

BARB AND STAR GO TO VISTA DEL MAR Director: Josh GreenbaumStarring: Annie Mumolo, Kristen Wiig, Jamie Dornan, Vanessa Bayer, Phyllis Smith, Fortune Feimster, Rose Abdoo When I saw the film open with the definition of culottes, I knew exactly what vibe to expect with Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar. Real life besties Annie Mumolo and Kristin Wiig star as our title characters and the plot is essentially given in the title. Both of these besties lose their jobs at a furniture store and are kicked out of the Talking Club. It’s a double whammy leaving them time to throw caution to theRead More →

Movie Review: MINARI

MINARI Writer/Director: Lee Isaac ChungStarring: Steven Yeun, Yeri Han, Alan S Kim, Yuh-jung Youn, Noel Cho, Will Patton Sometimes the quiet films that leave the biggest impact. I’d place the new film Minari in that category. Steven Yeun leads the film as Jacob, the patriarch of the Yi family. He moves his Korean American family from California to Arkansas hoping for a better life. He and wife Monica (Han) get jobs sorting chickens by sex, but his grand plan is to build a farm catering to other Korean families. Movie Review: JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH

JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH Director: Shaka KingStarring: Daniel Kaluuya, LaKeith Stanfield, Jesse Plemons, Dominique Fishback, Martin Sheen, Lil Rel Howery, Ashton Sanderson, Dominique Thorne, Algee Smith, Darrell Britt-Gibson Daniel Kaluuya is one of those actors you can’t get take your eyes off of. He followed up his Oscar nominated role in Get Out with Black Panther and Widows. In his new film Judas and the Black Messiah, he takes on Black Panther revolutionary Fred Hampton. FBI director J.Edgar Hoover had it out for the Black Panther party. He sees them as a massive threat to national security. It’s 1968 and 21 year old FredRead More →

Movie Review: LAND

LAND Director: Mike CahillStarring: Robin Wright, Demián Bichir, Kim Dickens Robin Wright is a well accomplished actress, but you may not know that she also directed many episodes of her Netflix series House of Cards and is now making her feature film debut as a director with Land. Not only does Robin Wright direct the film, but she stars as Edee, a woman plagued with depression and trauma. She has a hard time being around people and can’t seem to open up and share what’s going on with her therapist. She decides her only remedy is to buy an old run-down cabin in the middleRead More →

Movie Review: BLISS

BLISS Writer/Director: Mike CahillStarring: Owen Wilson, Salma Hayek, Bill Nye, Nesta Cooper, Jorge Lendeborg Jr. I always get excited when I’m watching a movie and feel like I’ve never this story before. It’s all the more disappointing when an original concept doesn’t quite pan out. Thus is the case for Bliss. Owen Wilson finds himself down on his luck as Greg Wittle. He loses his job at a place called Technical Difficulties and is still going through the complications of a divorce and a daughter wanting a stronger connection with her father. Salma Hayek’s character Dr. Isabel Clemens is that very stranger at a barRead More →

Movie Review: MALCOLM & MARIE

MALCOLM & MARIE Writer/Director: Sam LevinsonStarring: John David Washington, Zendaya Zendaya recently won an Emmy for her role on HBO’s Euphoria. When she and creator Sam Levinson couldn’t film Season 2 due to the pandemic, they decided to pivot in a new direction making the film Malcolm & Marie instead. This is a two-person film with John David Washington starring as the other title character, Malcolm. They arrive home after the big premiere of Malcolm’s new film, but tensions are high after he didn’t thank Marie during the premiere. Despite the fact she doesn’t want to talk about, he can’t go to bed angry. ThisRead More →
