PROJECT HAIL MARY and EPiC: ELVIS PRESLEY IN CONCERT

It’s a stacked week for those who collect physical media. There are some terrific films worth adding to your collection. Movies that demanded to be seen on the big screen and will continue to wow audiences even at home.

PROJECT HAIL MARY

One of the best movies of the year is Project Hail Mary that feels inspired by the great works of Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Audiences flocked to theaters to see this epic film that was part space adventure, part buddy comedy.

It’s based on the book of the same name by Andy Weir, and much like he did with The Martian, Andy Weir takes the audience into the impossible depths of space. We find Ryan Gosling’s character, Ryland Grace, waking up from an induced coma. He’s the only surviving member of his three-person team that’s been in space for quite some team. He realizes that he’s so far into space there’s no feasible way to return to Earth. The film uses extensive flashbacks in the weeks leading up to the mission. Ryland was just an ordinary middle school science teacher, but he is wickedly smarter than he gives himself credit for. He’s brought in to assist on a potential space disaster as there is a series of dots that have been found between Venus and the Sun. These dots appear to be multiplying and blocking out the Sun at a rapid pace posing a great danger for Earth’s climate. Ryland not only figures out what these dots are but finds himself unwillingly part of this one-way suicide mission in space known as “Project Hail Mary.” Sandra Huller stars as Eva Stratt, who is the mission leader on “Project Hail Mary.”

EPiC: ELVIS PRESLEY IN CONCERT

Director Baz Luhrmann brought Elvis Presley back to the big screen with the narrative film Elvis starring Austin Butler. Now he puts you front row for his Vegas residency with the new documentary, EPiC Elvis Presley in Concert. Luhrmann catapults the audience into a frenzy with his usual Baz flourishes thanks to a flashy edit of photos and videos of Elvis’ career. The audio is of Elvis himself talking about how he’s wanting to reclaim his career. He finally wants to tell his side of the story. He loves rock and roll and can’t help but move and jiggle to it. Hollywood’s image of him was wrong and every movie offer that he was sent was more and more of the same. There were no real acting opportunities sent to him. Once his film contracts were up, he could return to the stage. It’s 1969 as he settles in and prepares for his Las Vegas residency at the International Hotel. Baz Luhrmann takes us behind the scenes and then sits us in the audience to be up close and personal with The King.
