The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt has been passed around from book club to book club. My mother-in-law absolutely loved it and couldn’t put it down. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2014. The film adaptation is now here with a wonderful cast including: Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars), Oakes Fegley (Wonderstruck), Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story) and Nicole “rip my heart out” Kidman.

Per the Warner Bros. website “Theodore “Theo” Decker was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and even love.  Through it all, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day…a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch.  The Goldfinch.”

The creative team includes director John Crowley (Brooklyn) and Oscar winning cinematographer Roger Deakins. I haven’t read the book yet, but by the looks of the trailer, it looks gut-wrenching with its themes of loss and grief, yet Deakins’ work will make it visually stunning. It’s sure to be a big hit this fall striking an emotional reaction with moviegoers.
