Tom Hanks received the coveted Cecil B. DeMille Award, while Ellen Degeneres won the Carol Burnett Award.

Early on it seemed the the winners were fairly predictable, but that certainly changed toward the end of the night. I think the biggest surprise of the night might have been the wins for 1917 for Best Picture and Sam Mendes for Best Director. It has had a limited theatrical engagement so far, so the buzz hasn’t been as high for it as say The Irishman or Joker, which have been out for quite some time. 1917 will open in wide release this Friday, January 10. It’s not a complete shocker, as the international storyline of the World War I film does fall in line with how the Hollywood Foreign Press Association likes to vote.

The win for Taron Egerton for playing Elton John in Rocketman felt like a big win for him boosting his Oscar changes a little. Many predicted Leonardo DiCaprio to win over Egerton in the Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy category given the buzz for Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood. Winners in his category don’t always equate to Oscar nominations given the Academy’s dismissal toward films in that genre. I still think DiCaprio could get the nomination over Egerton.

Hollywood scored well with wins for Brad Pitt for Best Supporting Actor and Quentin Tarantino for Best Screenplay. Pitt beat out the likes of Tom Hanks and Al Pacino, who have been the favorites so far. Hanks and Pacino both have won Oscars for acting, unlike Pitt who has only won for producing 12 Years a Slave. I could can see Pitt and Laura Dern, who won Best Supporting Actress, winning Oscars as a “lifetimes/career achievement” style win as both are lauded and beloved by their peers.

As a reminder, there is no overlap in terms of the voting members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and any other voting guild like the Critics’ Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild, or the Academy. I personally don’t think there are any locks yet in any of the races, even in Best Actor. Adam Driver could sneak in some surprise wins for Marriage Story over Joaquin Phoenix’s run in Joker.
