SE7EN

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Se7en with a brand new 4K restoration supervised by director David Fincher. It hits shelves this week and not to be missed by cinephiles and movie collectors. This was Fincher’s second film following the very plagued release of Alien3, but you really see Fincher shine with Se7en. His signature style is already on full display and it marks the beginning of his collaborations with Brad Pitt and his examinations on the mindset behind a serial killer. He would later go on to director Zodiac and create the Netflix series, Mindhunter.

Se7en is your classic cat and mouse chase cranked up to full effect. It stars Morgan Freeman as Detective Somerset, a seasoned vet who is a week away from retiring and doesn’t want to be working a John Doe serial killer case. He’s forced into it and is partnered with hot shot detective Mills, played by Brad Pitt. They have very different ways of working, but John Doe is very distinct and calculated in his work. His victims and crime scenes are all inspired by the seven deadly signs. It’s a race against the clock for Somerset and Mills to catch him before he finishes all seven victims.

I would argue to say that Fincher’s film is a straight up masterpiece with the very precise eye he has become known for. It’s a gruesome film, and one that can be very hard to watch due to the nature of what John Doe lays out at every crime scene. If you’ve already scene the film, there’s great foreshadowing to watch out for as Fincher and screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker set out clues along the way for what’s in store. It’s a great mystery that’s sadistic and smart. Fincher has always been meticulous with casting, and Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt make for the perfect type of opposites at the center of the film. An Oscar-winning actor paired with a young, gorgeous Hollywood actor on the verge of stardom. They’re surround by a strong supporting cast with Gwyneth Paltrow, R. Lee Ermey, Richard Schiff, and Kevin Spacey.
